"[The word] otaku is a description of a person that would go beyond the limits of anyone else to pursue his or her interests of choice."
Ryan Gavigan
ACEN Chairman

"Otaku means obsessive nerd. It is not a positive word. No matter what you've heard, it is not a positive word."
Dave Merrill
AWA Chairman

"The most common personality trait that I find [amongst anime fans] is a shared outlook towards a positive future. They tend to like things that are beautiful and positive...I don't see a lot of angst at anime conventions."
Jason Martin
Professional comic book inker

Otaku Unite! will be released on DVD nationwide on March 7. I just discovered this when I was browsing Amazon, you can pre-order the movie from them for $18. If you're interested you can do so here. I'll try to get C.P.M. to add the special features list and all that this week. There will probably be an official press release concerning the release date and all that sometime soon.

OU! star Jonny Otaku was recently profiled in Chattanooga's alternative weekly newspaper "The Pulse". Check out the article below.

12.28.05
Otaku Unite! will be screened at the New York Comic-Con, February 26-28. OU! Director Eric B. will be on hand to answer questions and finish his Miracleman run. More details soon...

We thought it would be fun to share some of the best X-mas cards we received this year. Enjoy.

Geez, over two months since our last update. Well, there's not much new around here. We received the DVD packaging proofs from Central Park Media and they turned out pretty nice. We'll post them on here eventually. Other than that the DVD is coming along well, the CPM tech crew is currently mastering the extras. And that's about it.

Our sister site, TOKYOnoRADIO.com, is having a holiday sale on Japanese CDs. Super cheap, check out our deals here.

We're going to be returning to the world of anime cons next year to support the release of the OU! DVD. If you'd like to have OU! appear at your convention drop us an E-mail at info@otakuunite.com.

9.21.05
The Watertown Daily Times, OU! Director Eric B.'s hometown newspaper, recently published an article about him, which brings him one step closer towards an induction into the Watertown High School Hall of Fame. Read it here.

Good news for our fans in Japan: There's a strong possibility that the OU! DVD will have Japanese subtitles on it, which is quite uncommon for an American DVD release. Thanks go out to Yukari Shiina for helping out with this, check out her Japanese OU! site here.

Keith Cahoon over at Nippop recently did an Otakon write-up that he entitled "Otaku Unite!" (a phrase that we have copyrighted by the way), which includes a mention of OU!. Check it out here.

Last week we attended the Polysics tour kick-off at the Trash Bar in Brooklyn. It was one of the best shows we've ever seen. Check out some pictures here. The rest of Polysics' tour dates are available here.

We now have a MySpace account. Hooray. Be our friend: http://www.myspace.com/otakuunite

The cosplay photo shoot at Otakon was a huge success. Over 1000 costumers had their picture taken at the CPM booth in hopes of being included on the upcoming OU! DVD. CPM may be doing this again at another convention this Fall so we'll keep you updated.

8.17.05
Central Park Media will be announcing the release date for the upcoming Otaku Unite! DVD at next weekend's Otakon in Baltimore. Here's the lowdown on your chance to actually appear on the DVD:

COSPLAY PHOTO SHOOT SCHEDULED FOR OTAKON 2005
The Best Photos to be Included in Bonus Feature on Otaku Unite! DVD

New York, NY (August 11, 2005) In preparation for the upcoming release of Eric Bresler's anime fandom documentary Otaku Unite!, Central Park Media will be taking photographs of fans in their cosplay costumes at Otakon 2005. The best pictures will be included in a special photo gallery on the DVD release of this documentary which Anime News Network calls "almost magical" and Animation Insider calls "a primer to otaku culture to those on the outside and a celebration of the same to those on the inside".
Fans should come to the CPM booth (#1327) dressed as their favorite anime character any time during Otakon (August 19-21, 2005) and look for the Otaku Unite! display. CPM will be snapping cosplay photos all convention long. All those who plan on participating should get out their sewing kit, hair dye, spray paint, and duct tape, and get ready to have their picture taken as the perfect Black Jack, Utena, or Hoshimaru!

We've been spending the last few weeks setting up a new website, "TOKYO no RADIO", specializing in the sale of underground Japanese music of all genres. The site officially launches on Friday, but we're allowing OU! visitors to take a look around early. Click the link below.

Today was a big day for Otaku Unite!. Sushi was eaten, contracts were signed, and, after months of teasing, a DVD release was finally solidified. And who's the lucky winner? NYC's Central Park Media. And we couldn't be happier. How can you go wrong with the company that released both Weather Woman and Doggy Poo? An official release date will be announced within the next month or two, but until then you can read the official press release here.

In case you're new here, welcome to OtakuUnite.com, the official home of the world's first feature-length documentary on the history of anime fandom in the United States. This site was created way back in the Fall of 2000 when pre-production on the movie began and, five years later, its still alive and kicking. Here are some links of interest for our new visitors:

As some of you may have noticed, the site went down for a few days late last week. We've ditched our cheapskate host in favor of a great new one that we highly recommend if you need a host for your website: www.thenetmark.com. As a result of our problems all e-mails that were sent from last Thursday up to today were lost. Please try to re-send them if you sent us a message and have yet to hear back. Thanks.

1.19.05
The time for an update is now! We're currently waiting on one more licensing contract and then all of the paperwork and movie files will be sent to the distributor that is interested in getting an Otaku Unite! DVD into stores. Cross your fingers for us...

The commentary track for OU! has been completed and is somewhat entertaining in a train wreck sort of way.

The Japanese subtitling of OU! has been completed. Huge thanks go out to Yukari Shiina for all of her help. Click here to see Jonny Otaku with Japanese subtitles.

Our buddies Peelander-Z are currently on tour, click here to see if they're coming to your town. And while you're at it check out DAIKAIJU, a perfect blend of Kabuki theater and our favorite genre of music. We've been listening to their online jukebox all day.

OU! Director Eric B.'s all-Japanese rock/punk/craziness radio show can now be heard online every other Sunday (1/23 and on) at www.wkdu.org.

We are still scheduling screenings of OU! at anime/comic conventions for the duration of the year...e-mail Eric with your request.

11.22.04
Its obviously been a while since we last updated this site, we've been super busy working on the Otaku Unite! DVD. An official announcement about the DVD will be made within the coming months, but in the meantime here are a few details...

The OU! DVD will be handled by a major American anime distributor (one of the big ones!) who will be distributing it domestically. We get many requests for DVD releases in other countries, but our clip licenses apply to the U.S. alone thus there will be a great deal of paperwork if we try to get it distributed anywhere else. We will gladly speak to anyone who wants to step up to bat and take that responsibility.

We've been cutting together extras for the DVD for a couple of months now...a 10 minute segment on the OU! premiere at the Philly Film Fest was recently completed and we're currently working on a few other ideas. A commentary track will be recorded mid-December by Director Eric Bresler and crew member Charles Smith.

That's about it for now...stay tuned for more info. We are still scheduling screenings at anime conventions for the coming year, we have a few already in place but have yet to update that part of the site. If you're interested in hosting a screening of OU! then just drop us an e-mail.

9.13.04
There's lots going on over here at OU! headquarters (aka my basement)...we'll put up an update soon.

Paul Vlosich II, a student at the California University of Pennsylvania, recently sent us a great essay on the current state of anime fandom in the U.S., how fandom got where it is, and where fandom will be heading in the future. Check it out here.

Check out a great report from this past August's Comiket here, its well worth your time.

8.01.04
Otaku Unite! at Otakon 2004:
I'm going to write in the first person for this one. First off I have to thank everyone that came up to me throughout the day on Friday and voiced their appreciation of and admiration for Otaku Unite!. Completing a project like OU! is a reward in of itself, but the real payoff occurs when I receive kind words and handshakes from people like yourselves. So thanks to all of you. Now onto the screening itself...
The viewing room for Otaku Unite! was packed, there were anywhere from 200-300 people in there and the crowd was just amazing. Honestly my favorite crowd yet. The tailor-made Otakon intro went over extremely well and for the first time since the Philly Film Fest screening I actually had chills from the degree of applause it received. I sat in for the first 20 minutes of the movie and was so happy with the crowd reaction that I decided to go spend some money in the dealer's room before it closed. I returned to the viewing room about 15 minutes from the movie's end to find that the DVD they were screening was freezing for a matter of seconds every two minutes or so. My heart sank everytime this happened and I couldn't believe that the crowd was actually putting up with this. About seven minutes before the ending of the film I decided to take control of the situation. I ended the film, grabbed a microphone, and profusely apologized to the crowd for the technical difficulties. All of our screening DVDs are checked before they are sent out to conventions and festivals, this particular copy was checked by both myself and the Otakon programming coordinator thus the fault was not my own. It wasn't Otakon's either of course, it was just a result of a compatibility problem between the DVD and the particular VCR/DVD combo machine that was in the room. We checked the DVD after the screening on a different player and it worked fine. So all in all I consider the screening a success, but having to watch the movie with all of the glitches was a nightmare. I can't thank all of the anime fans who stuck it out to the end enough. Thanks guys.
Our panel that night went over fine. There weren't many people in the audience, but that was to be expected since it was 11 PM. The tech guy on hand was great so big thanks go out to him. It was wonderful to see a surprisingly large Philly contingent in the audience, its support like that that keeps me in this city.
So there, Otakon 2004. A frustrating success. I left the convention feeling good. I also left with DVD copies of Old Boy (which you should see if you haven't, one of the best Asian films I've seen in years), Battlefield Baseball, and Invader Zim plus a very cute plush cat and a plush keychain of a cat in a hotdog. One of the strangest things I've ever seen.
In closing, I'd like to point out how far Otaku Unite! has come since last summer's Otakon where we hosted a panel on the eve of our very first public screening at Anime Weekend Atlanta. Within a year's time OU! has screened at over 20 anime conventions including ones in Canada, Australia, and the UK. Its been shown at two film festivals, the first being our official World Premiere at the Philadelphia Film Festival where a huge after-party was held in OU!'s honor. We've not only sponsored, but have helped set up some incredible Japanese punk rock shows in the Philly/NYC area featuring bands like Peelander-Z, Blue-3, and Guitar Wolf. And we have a lot more surprises in store, some big announcements will be made within the coming months so keep an eye on this site.
Thanks for stopping by, Eric B. (Director, Otaku Unite!)

In other news, Japanese subtitling of Otaku Unite! is almost complete. Our subtitler in Japan (who works for Gainax by the way) is currently putting on the finishing touches. Now all that's left to do is get clearances from the Japanese companies who own the rights to the anime clips we use in the movie, which is proving to be much harder than it is in America (by harder we mean more expensive). We'll keep you updated on all of this as time goes by.

OU! crew members Kelli and Charles had a great time at the Comic Con screening last week, which reportedly went well. We were up against the Joss Whedon panel so...there.

We currently have DVD screeners of Otaku Unite! that we will gladly distribute to press outlets and distribution companies...just drop an e-mail to info@otakuunite.com if you're interested in obtaining one.
